At its heart, this powertrain is a self-charging hybrid (HEV) that blends mechanical combustion with immediate electric power.
-The Combustion Engine: A downsized 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine. It is engineered to extract maximum energy from a smaller displacement by using turbocharging to force more air into the cylinders, providing the punch of a larger engine without the high fuel consumption.
-The Dual-Motor Setup: Two electric motors work alongside the gas engine. One motor primarily acts as a generator to capture braking energy and restart the engine seamlessly. The second, larger motor provides direct electric propulsion to assist the gas engine during acceleration.
-The Planetary eCVT: Instead of a traditional geared automatic transmission, it uses an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT). This system manages power flow from both the engine and the electric motors simultaneously, smoothly blending the two power sources without distinct gear shifts.
-Regenerative Braking: The vehicle doesn't plug into a wall. Instead, it recovers kinetic energy normally lost during braking, converting it into electricity to charge a compact 1.08 kWh battery pack.
-Torque Fill: Electric motors deliver maximum torque instantly. By pairing them with a turbocharged engine, the electric motors provide instant power off the line while the turbocharger builds pressure, eliminating "turbo lag" and creating a linear, responsive acceleration curve.
-Efficiency Focus: Under light loads or when coasting, the system can shut down the gas engine entirely to run purely on electricity, contributing to its high city fuel economy. When maximum power is demanded, both systems work in tandem to deliver peak horsepower.
